At some point, every learner wants to move past the textbook and start reading real Japanese. The problem is that real news is fast, formal, and full of vocabulary you haven't learned yet. Opening a normal news article can leave you more discouraged than confident, even after months of study.
NHK's NEWS WEB EASY solves this problem in a very simple way, and it's worth making part of your regular routine.
NHK (Nippon Hoso Kyokai, or "Japan Broadcasting Corporation") is Japan's national public broadcaster, similar to the BBC in the UK. It runs TV channels, radio stations, and a large news website, and it's generally seen as one of the most trusted sources of news in Japan.
NEWS WEB EASY is a section of NHK's website where the day's real news stories are rewritten in simplified Japanese (known in Japanese as NHKやさしいことばニュース). Instead of using the fast, formal language of a normal news broadcast, sentences are shortened, difficult words are swapped for easier ones, and furigana (small reading guides) are added above kanji. Most articles also come with audio, so you can listen to a native speaker read the exact text in front of you.
NHK actually built this for foreign residents living in Japan and for children, not specifically for people studying Japanese as a foreign language in a classroom. But the same simple, accessible language that makes it useful for those groups also makes it an excellent, real-world reading resource for learners.
Because kanji come with furigana, you can read without stopping every few seconds to look one up. Don't let the word "easy" in the name fool you, though. It's easy compared to a normal news broadcast, not easy in an absolute sense, and the vocabulary and grammar can still be genuinely demanding. This is best thought of as a resource for learners who already have a solid grounding in Japanese and are looking for a real step up from textbook material, rather than something to start with on day one. You'll also need to already be comfortable reading hiragana and katakana, since furigana only helps with kanji, not with the writing system itself. And because the topics are real, current events, you're reading because you're actually curious what happened, not just because a textbook told you to.
The audio adds another layer. Reading and listening to the same content at the same time helps connect the written word to its sound, which is exactly the kind of practice that's hard to get from a textbook.
Skimming one article and closing the tab won't do much on its own. A short routine gets far more value out of each article. Start by reading it once for the general idea, without stopping for unknown words. Then play the audio while reading along, to hear the rhythm and pronunciation. On a second pass, slow down and look up anything you didn't understand, and jot down two or three new words worth remembering.
Ten to fifteen minutes a day like this, done consistently, adds up to a lot of reading practice over a few months.
Difficulty still varies from day to day depending on the topic, so don't worry if one article feels harder than the last. It's a stepping stone, not a final destination. As your reading improves, you can eventually move on to regular NHK articles.
