One Month to Go. How to Spend Your Final JLPT Prep Time Wisely

Jun 01, 2026    |    0

If you're sitting the JLPT this July, you're now in the final stretch. One month out is a pivotal moment. Close enough that every study session counts, but still enough time to make a real difference. The question isn't whether to study. It's where to put your energy.

Not All Study Time Is Equal

With about four weeks to go, the most important shift you can make is to stop thinking about how many hours you're putting in, and start thinking about where those hours are going. Studying hard is not the same as studying smart. A learner who spends their final month reinforcing what they already know well may feel productive, but they could be missing the bigger picture.

This is where understanding how the JLPT is actually scored makes all the difference.

Don't Play to Your Strengths. Fix Your Weaknesses.

Here's something many test-takers don't fully appreciate until it's too late. The JLPT isn't scored simply by adding up your total points. Each section has its own minimum passing score. If you fall below that threshold in even one section, you fail, regardless of how well you did everywhere else.

The numbers, straight from the official JLPT website, are striking. For N1, N2, and N3, each section — Language Knowledge, Reading, and Listening — is scored out of 60, with a minimum passing score of 19 points. For N4 and N5, the Language Knowledge and Reading section is scored out of 120 with a minimum of 38 points, and Listening is out of 60 with a minimum of 19. In both cases, that works out to roughly 31.7%, a threshold that might sound easy to clear, but can catch you off guard if one area has been neglected.

This changes everything about how you should allocate your time in the final month. Your strongest section won't save you. Your weakest one will sink you.

If you're strong in Reading but have always found Listening difficult, spending most of your remaining time on Reading might feel comfortable, but it's a risk you simply can't afford. A weak section isn't just a weak area. It's a potential dealbreaker.

Know Where You Stand

Before you can prioritise effectively, you need an honest picture of where you actually are across all sections. If you haven't already, now is the time to take a timed practice test and look carefully at your results by section, not just your total score.

Ask yourself which section you are least confident in. Which one, if you had a bad day, could fall below the minimum? That's your answer, and that's where your final month should be focused.

The Hardest Part. Tackling Weaknesses on Your Own.

Identifying your weak section is one thing. Actually improving it in four weeks is another, and this is where many learners hit a wall.

It's easy to practise what you're already good at. It's much harder to make meaningful progress on a weak area by yourself, especially when you're not entirely sure why you're struggling or what to prioritise. Sometimes the most efficient use of your remaining time is to get targeted help from someone who understands both the exam and your specific gaps.

You Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone

A good JLPT tutor doesn't just teach Japanese. They help you pinpoint exactly where you're losing marks and work with you to address it before test day. Whether your weak point is Listening, Reading comprehension, or the grammar component of Language Knowledge, a tutor can give you focused, personalised guidance that would take far longer to piece together on your own.

At SuikaTalk, we have tutors who specialise in JLPT preparation across all levels. If you have one month left and a clear weak spot, this might be exactly the right time to get some expert support.
